  Compiling BINUTILS for ARM platform

The compilation of the binutils-package for the ARM processor is just the same as it is for the SH4 just with a different target-tag and a different prefix. So just follow these steps:

  • Set the needed environment variables in your shell with the following commands:

    target=arm-elf
    prefix=/usr/local/dc/$target
    binaries=$prefix/bin
    PATH=$binaries:$PATH

  • Change to your BUILD-BINUTILS directory

    cd /gcc/build-binutils

  • Clean up the BUILD-BINUTILS directory
    (if you've just compiled the SH4 toolchain you should really do this)

    make clean

  • Configure your makefile so that it reflects your TARGET and DIRECTORIES

    ../binutils-2.11.2/configure --target=$target --prefix=$prefix

    (you're used to lengthy processes now, so just grab a coffee)

  • Start the make-procedure including install

    make all install

    (as with the step above this may take some time... even some more than configuring)

  • Also to be able to use the binutils and compiler we have to add the directory to our path in either .profile or .bashrc add the following line: (this line is valid for both the binutils and gcc !)

    PATH=/usr/local/dc/arm-elf/bin:$PATH

Now you have your ARM-BINUTILS sitting in /usr/local/dc/arm-elf/bin (or any other path you defined in $prefix) . And are ready to comile the remaining parts of the toolchain.
