Multiplexing MPEG4 Video with AC3 Sound
Updated: August 8th, 2001 @ 22:24

Software needed for this step of DVD conversion:

[VirtualDub AC3 Release]
[AVI/AC3 Multiplexing Package]

This short tutorial only refers to the audio part of converting a movie. For a detailed explanation of how to convert the video part of a DVD refer to the following sections:

[CSS-Decryption / Ripping]

Once you finished the video part it's time to deal with the audio-part. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to multiplex and existing AC3 stream with MPEG4 Video :

  • Download the AVI-AC3 Multiplexer Package
  • Unpack into a directory of your choice
  • Start the included batchfile that installs the AC3 filters.

    Windows 98: registerfilters-98.bat
    WinNT/Win2k: registerfilters-2k.cmd

  • Demultiplex the audiostream using vstrip or alternatively you could have checked the DirectStreamCopy checkbox in FlaskMPEGs settings for Audio or you could have used SmartRipper to demux
(so you have alot of options to choose from)
  • Copy the changed VirtualDub-AC3.exe to your VirtualDub directory.
(you may also just start the executable)
  • Start VirtualDub-AC3.exe
  • Use menu File->Open video file... and choose your converted video.
  • Choose menu Video->Direct Stream Copy
  • Use menu Audio->WAV Audio and select your AC3 File
  • VirtualDub will state the bitrate and format of the AC3 File
  • Select menu Audio->Interleaving
    The following window will appear:

  • Set Preload to 160 ms
  • Set Interleave audio every to 160 ms
(Make sure that the ms checkbox is checked)
  • Hit OK

  • Choose menu Audio->Direct Stream Copy
  • If your have chosen your movie to fit onto 2 CDs you might also want to split it up now
  • Choose menu Video->Select Range...

    Now set the lenths appropriatly:

    1st CD)
    - Start offset has to be set to 0
    - Length should be set to the half of Length

    2nd CD)
    - Start offset has to be set around the Length of CD1
    - End offset should be set to 0
(the length should be set automatically to the right value)

  • Hit the OK button
  • Save file with File->Save AVI...
(you have to do with with ever disc you decided to make)
